API documentation

Programmatic access to identity verification, matching, and identity data. Build on the ~alter identity layer.

The way in

The primary way in is your AI client. In Claude, ChatGPT, Le Chat, or Perplexity, add a custom connector at https://mcp.truealter.com/api/v1/mcp, sign in through your browser, and choose your ~handle. Choosing your ~handle is how your account is created. Then use your AI as you normally would. No terminal required. The Getting Started guide and the client guides walk through it. The REST API, CLI, and JWT flows below are the deeper developer layer.

Install the CLI and daemon (optional)

You don’t need any of this to get started; the connector above is the way in. Two things ship. The alter command is the CLI, and it is what members use day to day. alter-runtime is the optional always-on daemon, and it ships through the native package managers. The @truealter/sdk JavaScript / TypeScript client is separate again, on npm.

curl -sSf https://truealter.com/install.sh | bash

For the daemon, or for a package your system owns and updates, pick the channel that matches your platform. Every option per platform is on the install page.

Base URL

bash
https://api.truealter.com/api/v1

Developer quick start (REST)

For raw REST access: get a JWT token and make your first request. Most members reach all of this through the connector instead. For a fuller walkthrough, see the Getting Started guide.

curl -X POST https://api.truealter.com/api/v1/auth/login \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"email": "you@example.com", "password": "your-password"}'

Authentication

Most endpoints need a JWT bearer token. Pass it in the Authorization header:

bash
Authorization: Bearer eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIs...

See Authentication for token lifecycle and refresh flows.
